Editing Wedding Images
A question we get asked quite regularly is "do we edit the images before we hand them over to the client"?
The answer is most definitely YES! Even the best photographers in the world with the most expensive equipment cannot take the perfect picture every time, we are no different.
It is even more difficult for wedding photography as the conditions can continuously change. You can go from a light room to a dark room, from glorious sunshine to a shaded area. Each of these requires adjustments to be made to the camera settings. We cannot stop events to take practice shots to check things like lighting, white balance and exposure. As experienced photographers we can adapt to the changing conditions quickly and not interrupt the flow of the day. This is crucial as it ensures the bride, groom and all the guests can enjoy the big day.
When we return to the studio we check over all of the images and make the necessary adjustments. We also perform extensive editing to remove any prominent distractions from images.
Below are some examples of this. Editing the images can be time consuming and it is not uncommon to be in excess of 20 hours for a wedding.
On the first image below we removed the oil patches from the ground. We then converted the image to high contrast black and white. To ensure the viewers attention was drawn to the shoe we also slightly darkened the corners of the image.

On the image below we removed the fire alarm on the left of the image and there was also the registra's bag on the floor. In our opinion both items were a distraction and lowered the quality of the image.
This is a great picture of the brides grandmother and was taken as she went to greet a friend. Unfortunately another guest walked across our line of view. However we liked the image and decided it was worth the effort to make the necessary adjustments. Firstly we transformed the image from landscape to portrait which removed the gentleman on the right and much of the door hinge. A little extra editing was required to totally remove the door hinge, we then removed the alarm siren and enhanced the colours. Finally we subtley darkened the corners of the image.
Every bride wants to look their best on their wedding day, especially when it's a close up shot! Although the diffences in the images below are only very slight it is quite time consuming. We started off by softening the skin and hair. We then slightly enhanced the colours to make both the bride and the make-up artists hand stand out form the background.
Here you can see all the cars of the wedding guests on the righthand side. The first step was to remove all the cars. Then we rebuilt the wall and continued the drain pipe to the ground. All that was left to do was add some gravel.
